ORDERING

Linda Luiks: I create vertical, rhythmic wall objects from wood, acrylic paint and epoxy. My work develops through looking, shifting, weighing and starting over. I am not looking for a predetermined composition, but for the moment when I look at the work and think: yes, now it feels right.

My works consist of stripes, blocks, lines and relief. They can be read from top to bottom, like narrow codes or visual rhythms. I work with contrasts: large and small, warm and cool, complementary and analogous, precise and hand-drawn. The rhythm is built through repetition, measure, displacement and interruption. These contrasts bring tension into the rhythm.

My process often begins with a digital drawing of the basic form, which is then cut out. After that, the work is built up by hand. I place the relief elements, apply a warm grey ground layer, and work over it with fields of colour and lines.

This grey base often remains visible and holds the work together. Sometimes I paint entire sections back to this ground layer, so I can look again, puzzle again and decide again.

A work can arise from a mood, a memory, a colour, a moment or something I have seen. It may come from stillness, restlessness or hyperfocus, but also from the movement of a dance, the relationship between two forms, or a detail from my surroundings. What touches me is translated into colour, measure, depth and rhythm.

For me, making is a way of ordering. Ultimately, I am searching for the moment when the work no longer asks for intervention: when colour, measure, line and depth have found their place.

The Netherlands, in the quiet North

the studio

In 2025, Linda moved to the north of the Netherlands. She lives and works in Heeg, a village that comes to life in summer with sailors, visitors and water sports, and becomes quiet again in winter. At home, she has a spacious studio looking over the water, where she spends as much time as possible.

In the studio, there are lots of jars of hand-mixed paint, colour samples, wooden test pieces and long wall objects in progress – sometimes several at the same time. It can be a lively space, where colours, materials and ideas move through one another.

But when things do not quite come together, Linda often starts by tidying up. Everything back in its place, creating clarity again, making room to look again. In the studio too, chaos and order constantly alternate. There is one constant: she is always accompanied by Tommie, her little dog.

Linda warmly welcomes anyone interested in her work. To show what she is working on, exchange thoughts, or simply share a cup of coffee in the studio.
